Sucroferric oxyhydroxide is a phosphate binder composed of polynuclear iron (III)-oxyhydroxide. Its mechanism of action is based on physical interception: when ingested with a meal, it binds to dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract. The bound phosphate then passes out of the body in the stool, preventing its absorption into the bloodstream.

It is indicated for the control of serum phosphorus levels in adult patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. By lowering serum phosphorus, it helps prevent secondary complications such as hyperparathyroidism and vascular calcification. It is administered as a chewable tablet. Its iron-based composition offers an alternative to calcium-based or non-absorbable polymer phosphate binders in the management of hyperphosphatemia.
